New Bells Are Cast...

On 13 July 2007 three of the new bells for St Stephen's Tower were cast at Whitechapel Bell Foundry, in East London. Whitechapel Bell Foundry has a history of continuous production since 1570, and is famous for casting the bells of Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the Great Bell of Montreal.

The casting was witnessed by Rector, the Revd Jonathan LLoyd and Churchwarden Mrs Liz O'Connell, molten tin and copper were poured into the bell casts at a temperature of 1850 degrees Celsius. The new set of 6 bells will be hung by Whites of Appleton Ltd, a firm of Church Bellhangers established in 1824.

There will also be a sound-control system fitted in the tower, so that the external sound from the tower during practices will be lowered.

As the new bells will be light to ring (the tenor bell is less than 3cwt), St Stephen's Church will be encouarging young people to train as ringers. It is hoped that Campanology Clubs will be set up at our three local schools - St Stephen's Church of England Primary, Kingswood and Royal High Schools. For further information please contact the St Stephen's Church Office 01225 420 946.

The St Stephen's Tower Appeal offers special thanks to the following for their donations towards the bells;
  • The ringers of St Mary's Church Bathwick who have donated a bell in memory of the late Robin Stubbs, one of their ringers who died last year.
  • The Keltek Trust who have donated a bell.
  • The ringers of St Michael's Without, Bath, who have donated a bell.
  • The Bath & Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers for a grant towards the remaining three bells.
