The tower is a living symbol of St Stephen's
church and its vibrant community centre, which is the only public
community building in Lansdown and widely used by a diverse range of
people and groups each week.
Our Victorian ancestors built our beautiful Gothic tower using soft Bath stone and metal cramps to hold it together. Unfortunately they used iron rather than more expensive brass or bronze. After 150 years of howling winds, traffic vibrations and ageing water has seeped through the mortar and corroded the iron. Expansion from the rusting iron then "blows out" the soft Bath stone, making the path below unsafe and threatening the overall stability of the tower.
The loose and misplaced stones are threatening
the overall stability of the tower....
conservation work is required urgently.
Without restoration the dangers presented by the condition of the tower will eventually cause the church and community centre to close.
